What kind of place is this office?
Where is it located, and when will it move?
OPEN, Inc. is headquartered on the 3rd floor of the KDX Nishi-Shimbashi Building in Nishi-Shimbashi, Minato Ward, Tokyo.
In November 2024, we relocated from our previous location at Toranomon Hills Mori Tower.
In addition to Open Group, other companies in the group are also located on the same floor.
What kind of office concept is this?
The new office is designed with the concept of a “hub for communication where people gather,” aiming to create a space where employees can naturally run into one another and engage in conversation.
The theme is to create a space where people can see the value in coming into the office while still balancing that with remote work.
Based on the concept of a “hub for communication where people gather,” the space is composed of three elements: a floor designed to encourage conversation, a café space where visitors can engage with learning, and facilities that accommodate a diverse workforce.
Why did they move?
What challenges did you face?
While remote work has become the norm in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and diverse work styles have become more widespread, opportunities for employees to gather in the same place have decreased.
Furthermore, in June 2024, OPEN, Inc. was established through the merger of three companies—RPA Technologies, Segment, and Open Associates (which became the BizRobo! Division, the Digital Marketing Division, and the RoboRobo Division, respectively)—and one challenge was that the organization was becoming slightly fragmented by business unit.
The old office was U-shaped, making it difficult for departments at opposite ends to interact, which tended to weaken the sense of unity.
What was the goal of the relocation?
Creating an environment where employees from different business units can collaborate across organizational boundaries to generate synergy.
And to create an office where productivity is higher than at home and where employees feel it’s worth coming in to work.
These two points were the reasons for the relocation.
What are your preferences for your office?
A Floor for Interaction Across Business Units
Basically, the three business units are located on a single floor, and the design allows for a clear view of the entire space without high partitions.
The desks are deliberately arranged in an irregular pattern rather than facing the same direction, designed to encourage natural conversations with colleagues from departments that don’t usually interact when people move around.
We’ve finished the pillars with a wood-grain finish and installed whiteboards so that people can hold quick meetings without having to go to a conference room.
A Café Space That Fosters Learning and Interaction
We’ve set up a café area so that coming into the office will be an inspiring experience.
We have spaces available for seminars and in-house training sessions, as well as bookshelves filled with books recommended by our employees, and we can also host lectures by guest speakers.
Learning from the fact that employees at our previous office rarely had the opportunity to gather in one place, we designed this space to be a place where people can naturally come together.
Facilities Designed to Support Diverse Work Styles
The office and café area are located on the same floor, allowing you to choose a space based on your work needs, such as individual work, team work, or in-person meetings.
Almost every desk is equipped with a power outlet, and there are six conference rooms, as well as booths designed for online meetings.
We have chosen round tables for the conference room to facilitate open-ended discussions.
A design that symbolizes growth
In the entrance and café areas, plants have been arranged to symbolize the company’s growth into the future, and real greenery has been incorporated into the main space.
In addition, the brand’s identity is expressed throughout the entire space by incorporating the color scheme of the redesigned logo into the sofa upholstery and rugs, as well as by incorporating custom-built furniture that evokes the logo’s curves.
In particular, the large symbolic tree placed at the entrance is intended to embody the vision of the company’s growth.
What makes it an attractive place to work?
How are you making it more worthwhile to come to the office?
We offer free coffee at the café counter to encourage conversation while customers wait.
In addition, we’ve implemented initiatives designed to encourage conversation among employees, such as Office Glico and free snack boxes in the café area (which are set up on the condition that at least two people use them).
We do not require employees to come into the office; instead, we prioritize creating incentives that make them “want to come in” while allowing them to balance remote work with in-office work.
What Has Changed Since the Move?
Since the move, new forms of communication—such as casual conversations over a cup of coffee—have naturally begun to take place, something that didn’t happen before.
According to an internal survey, the office attendance rate has risen by about 10%, and the new office is helping to foster interaction and a sense of unity.
Thanks to the Office Glico snacks and treat boxes placed in the café area, we’ve started to see small interactions among employees, such as them saying to one another, “You really worked hard today.”
